Footballer will pay criminal injury compensation to woman after assault in club

A premiership footballer will pay a woman criminal injury compensation after assaulting her in a nightclub.

Marlon King of Wigan Athletic was out celebrating the winning goal he had scored in the day’s earlier match when he is said to have made advances of an aggressive sexual nature towards a 20-year old woman.

Upon being rejected multiple times, he lashed out and punched her in the face – breaking her nose with one punch and causing multiple facial injuries, including a split lip and black eye.

It was revealed that Mr King has had a string of previous offences, and a history of being abusive to women. He was once convicted of assault after chasing women in Soho, London with a belt and buckle.

The victim, who cannot be named, told the jury that King had said to her: ‘You’re not even in my league love, I’m a multimillionaire.’

After a majority jury ruling of 10-2, Mr King was sentenced to an 18-month prison sentence, and will pay £3,125 criminal injury compensation to the victim, along with £1,800 in costs.

His club, Wigan Athletic have sacked him with immediate affect and have stated he will never play for them again.
