A haulage firm has been fined after one of its drivers was run over by a truck.
The accident happened to Ian Mackie in the haulage yard of R & J Milne Ltd in November 2010. He was in the wash bay area of the premises with a number of drivers who were cleaning the tractor unit/cabs of their heavy goods vehicles.
The incident occurred whilst Mr Mackie was talking to another driver near the front of one of the tractor units. The driver of this vehicle jumped into the cab and attempted to pull out from the wash bay.
As the vehicle was turning out of the wash bay, it accidentally struck Mr Mackie and knocked him to the ground. One of the front wheels of the vehicle drove over his right leg and caused him devastating injuries
His pelvis was fractured in the incident, as well as numerous bones in his foot. The force of the impact also removed the soft tissue from his leg. The injuries meant that Mr Mackie had to spend 13 weeks in hospital and have a metal plate fitted in his pelvis.
The HSE found that there was no organised system to segregate pedestrians and vehicles in the wash bay area of the yard. R & J Milne Ltd were fined £20,000 this week for breaking health and safety regulations in relation to the incident.
