A decision by the High Court which would have allowed ex-servicemen to pursue Compensation Claims has been appealed against by the Ministry of Defence. (MoD)
In the 50’s, Atomic weapons tests took place in the Christmas and Monte Bello Islands. Over 1000 men were involved and exposed to radiation. Many of these men have since developed a range of conditions including skin cancers and fertility problems.
The veteran’s claim is that they were given no warnings that the radiation could cause health problems, and they were not given adequate protection.
The MoD denies negligence and argues that the veteran’s Compensation Claims are outside the legal time limit so they are owed nothing more than a “debt of gratitude”.
