A police officer searching for a stolen vehicle was branded as ‘over enthusiastic’ by a crown court judge, after he crashed his powerful police car into the side of a bus.
The Lancashire Evening Post is reporting that PC David Little was trying to spot a stolen vehicle, when he jumped a red light as he travelled along the A6 Garstang Road, in Broughton, Preston.
Liverpool Crown Court was told that PC Little’s BMW estate, had been travelling at a speed of 56mph in wet conditions on the 40mph road, just prior to the collision with the bus, which he hit at an estimated speed of 39mph.
The driver of the bus and his only passenger both suffered a whiplash injury in the accident.
PC Little was fined £2,000 and banned from driving for twelve months, after pleading guilty to a charge of dangerous driving; he will also be facing a police disciplinary hearing in regards to the incident.
The police constable was described in court as an excellent officer and an advanced police driver, with the judge stating that on this occasion, it would appear that over enthusiasm had got the better of him, in what was after all a non-emergency situation.
